“Attempt Me”, titled “Attempt Me (I Want You)” in its unique launch, is a track recorded by James Brown and The Well-known Flames in 1958. It was a #1 R&B hit and charted #48 Pop – the group’s first look on the Billboard Sizzling 100. It was Brown and the Flames’ second charting single, ending a two-year dry spell after the success of “Please, Please, Please”.

By 1958 James Brown’s profession was faltering. After disputes over royalties, songwriting credit score, and the indignity of getting been relegated to backup singers on the billing of “Please, Please, Please”, a lot of the unique Well-known Flames (together with founder Bobby Byrd) had walked out on him; solely Johnny Terry remained.

Brown continued to carry out with a backing band and a brand new Flames lineup consisting of members of Little Richard’s former vocal group, the Dominions. (“Large Invoice” Hollings, Louis Madison, and J.W. Archer).  They recorded extra songs for Federal Data, however 9 of their singles in a row didn’t chart.

On the best way again to Macon, Georgia after a disappointing West Coast tour, Brown approached his guitar participant Bobby Roach with a tune he mentioned he had been given by a patron on the Million Greenback Palms, a Florida nightclub. After Roach crafted a guitar half for “Attempt Me”, Brown and the Flames labored out the vocal harmonies collectively and reduce a demo to ship to label head Syd Nathan.

Nathan was impressed with it and organized for a recording session in New York with producer Andy Gibson and a bunch of seasoned session musicians.  Regardless of the contributions of different individuals, Brown took the only writing credit score for the track.

In his 1986 autobiography, Brown described “Attempt Me” as “actually a pop tune. I had heard “Raindrops” by Dee Clark and “For Your Valuable Love” by Jerry Butler and the Impressions, so I wrote my track to suit between them.” Nevertheless, “Raindrops” was really launched greater than two years after “Attempt Me”.  Wiki
